Etsy Love: Coco and Bear – Vintage Finds for the Home

I have completely fallen in love with an Etsy shop.  Ok, it happens a lot, I admit.  I certainly do love my Etsy shops.

But this time it’s for real, yo!  Coco and Bear is a Canadian shop that features unique vintage finds for the home.  As a brand new collector of vintage items, I am over the moon!

I stumbled upon Kim’s shop accidentally… I had seen somewhere a picture of little turquoise blue melamine cups that she was selling in her shop.  They reminded me of camping trips when I was young and I just had to have them.  Unfortunately, by the time I made my way to her shop, they were sold.

But what I discovered instead was just amazing:  Incredible vintage finds, really fair prices, spectacular photography of all of her items (complete eye candy!) and bonus for me…. she’s Canadian so no hefty delivery and customs fees!  Woohoo!!!

So I put in my order, and this is what arrived beautifully packaged a few days later:

A sweet little dolls outfit.  I see this inspiring tons of little dresses for my girls.

A new Pyrex bowl, to add to my little collection (I’m at piece #3!)

A Fisher Price helicopter, just like I had when I was little.  Yes, I also collect vintage Fisher Price toys, *swoon*!

And you might remember that I started a collection of vintage cameras.  Well, add two more to the collection!

And finally, I just had to get this old school rotary dial telephone.

It weighs a ton!!! I had completely forgotten how heavy these phones were.  And I just had to giggle when Maïan asked me how it worked…

Kim was just lovely and managed to pack all this in a way that was extremely economical to ship.  Plus she even noticed when I made a mistake in my order (the girl is on the ball!).

I am just realizing that she has a blog called Coco & Bear, just like her Etsy shop.  Go check it out!

Thanks Kim for the excellent service and the beautiful and unique items!  I will be back real soon for more!!!  (Shhhttt… don’t tell Chaughan!)

Etsy Love: Vintage Posters for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is just around the corner!  I always find it a bit of a struggle to find something for Chaughan on behalf of the girls.  Socks, ties, chocolates, tools… been there and done that!

But I might be on to something this year… how about a vintage print that the entire family (and especially the only boy in our gang!) will love? Etsy to the rescue!!!

1. Original Print Superman Batman Spiderman from Total Lost.
2. Polaroid Poster Print by Yumalum
3. Ottawa Canada Typography Art Canvas by Legacy House Art
4. Star Wars Poster- Darth Vader by Poster Explosion

Aren’t they great?  Chaughan is sure to love these prints!  And more importantly, I will have no trouble whatsoever living with such manly art… hehehe….

A Jacket for Nate

I don’t get the chance to sew for boys very often… so when my friend Natasha invited us over for her little guy’s second birthday, I jumped at the chance to sew a sweet little jacket for Nate.
A quick Etsy search later and my pattern was found:  The Monster Hoodie by My Childhood Treasures.  Dixi has come up with some really sweet and vintage looking patterns.  And lucky for me, a few were specifically for boys.  Now this particular pattern was meant to have a lovely boy-pulling-a-monster applique… and I had every intention of of sewing it on.  But at the last minute, I changed my mind.  It might have had to do with an email exchange with Natasha earlier in the day, where I was telling her that I was sewing a little something something for Nate, and that I was steering away from anything too cute.  She responded by telling me that Nate had tons of clothes with trucks and such on them, so please go cute!  So cute I went!

For the fabric, I chose a navy blue corduroy for the outside, and a soft grey fleece for the liner.  Both fabrics were upcycled, the corduroy being a former duvet cover, and the fleece a little baby blanket.  I love giving cloth a second life!

The sleeves and the inside of the hood are the same striped jersey fabric that I had used for Alix’s dress a few months ago.  Some blue and orange pieces of felt were used for the hearts, and a little blue button was sewn on top of the flap (which actually closes with velcro – much easier for little Nate who is just learning to dress himself… and much faster for parents too!)

And here is sweet little Nate sporting his new jacket! Thanks Natasha for the amazing pictures… he looks darling!  And I’m so happy to see that the jacket fits just right!

This kid is just soooooooo cute!!!! In French, we say “Il est croquable!”, which translates to “He is bite-able”….  I know, kind of a weird thing to say in English, but I think you get what I mean!

A little birdie told me… {Toddler Dress + Applique Tutorial}

Little Birdie Applique + Tutorial

I’ve been so wrapped up in quilt making lately that I’ve neglected another small obsession of mine… pretty little dresses for my pretty little girls.  And it hit me that I hadn’t yet made a single dress for Gaëlle…

So when I stumbled upon the Harper Reversible Dress, I knew I had to get busy!

Little Birdie Applique + Tutorial

I found the pattern at Sew Sweet Patterns on Etsy.  This dress has beautiful pleats in the front, and is completely reversible.  The PDF pattern was super easy to follow and extremely well illustrated.  Plus it came as an instant download which is a huge bonus for someone like me who, when inspired, needs to create immediately.

To push my sewing skills a little bit, I decided to add a functional little pocket to the front with a sweet polkadot birdie applique.

My inspiration for the little applique comes from Kelliex and her amazing quilts and pillows over at Don’t Look Now!  This woman has mad skills!  Sadly, her blog doesn’t seem to be active anymore but luckily for me, her works of art live on in the blogosphere!  Check out her Flower Garden Tutorial and you will see what I mean.  It is also there that I found a free template for this sweet little birdie.

Little Birdie Applique + Tutorial

If you feel like trying out this little appliqued bird, here’s a quick tutorial:

Bird Applique Tutorial

1. Cut out your paper pattern and pin to your fabric. Cut your fabric pieces.  For this particular bird, you will need a body, a wing and a beak.  (Since the look I was trying to obtain was a more childlike scribble, I ended up eyeballing my fabric cuts and thereby skipping the paper pattern phase completely.  Between you and me, it’s the part I hate anyway so I am all for skipping it!)

2. Back your fabric pieces with and iron-on adhesive, like HeatnBond.

3. Iron on your adhesive-backed fabric pieces to your little pocket. *The pocket is not sewn to the dress at this point.

4. Now comes the part that made me sweat a little (but ended up being super simple… especially since I wasn’t going for a clean and perfect look):  Using your free motion foot, drop your feed dogs and stitch slowly all around the body of the bird.  To get the look I wanted, I retraced my steps 3 or 4 times.  Do the same for the wing.  *Now don’t panic if it looks weird after your first go around (I was sure I had ruined it…)  Keep tracing the contour and you will see it take shape!

5.  For the tail, make pencil marks on your fabric where you will want your spirals to go.  Again, retrace your stitches over each spiral about 4 times (working on one spiral at a time).  Do the same for the legs (which at this point will seem really easy compared to your spirals!)

6. Hand stitch a simple little eye with some black embroidery thread.  The simpler the better. A little X could also be cute.

7.  Snip all your little threads, front and back.  Secure your pocket to the dress by topstitching the sides and bottom of the pocket (the top having already been topstitched prior to adding the applique).

 You’re done!

Here’s the same little dress in all her reversible glory.

Buttons were an option but as my button sewing skills are mediocre at best, I found my life was greatly simplified with the use of snaps.  Besides, in this family, teeny tiny buttons on teeny tiny dresses on wriggly little toddlers generally stay unbuttoned…  Snaps fare much better!

Etsy Love: Cuckoo for Clocks

I absolutely adore clocks… especially funky, quirky, eclectic clocks.  Thankfully, Etsy is full of amazingly unique handcrafted clocks.

I’ve put together a little collage of four clocks that are making me drool right now… Can you help me pick one out for my newly renovated kitchen? If it were up to me, I would get all four but I’m pretty convinced Chaughan would object.  He is firmly in the one-clock-per-room camp.  Boooooring!!!!

Honestly, is there such a thing as too many clocks???  Am I the only one obsessing with clocks???  Do I need help???

Momma got herself a facelift!

Well, ok, not quite… but my blog did!

A little nip here, a little tuck there…. ahhhhh, much better no?  Now there’s no way that I could have done this alone.  Enter Brielle from Three Eleven Design.  Now this girl reads html like nobody’s business!  I had an absolute blast working with her… she came with a bucket load of ideas, and a barrel load of patience (sorry for the million tweaks Brielle)!

Don’t get me wrong, I liked my little template the way it was before, little flying birds and all;  but I just wanted to give my baby (yes, I am calling this blog “my baby”… don’t judge!) a bit more of a polished look.  It was time to step it up!

So I went from this….

…to this!!!

I am in love!!! Check out the decked out logo at the top, the can’t-miss-me-now social media buttons on the top left, and my sweet little signature at the bottom of the post…   *swoon*

Plus I am all fancy with my blog buttons… heeeeellllooooo!!!!!
